So in writing this I struggled with the famous question “What topic should I write about?” Literally hundreds of things came to my mind, interesting topics like, “real vs fake”, “Anger”, “Girl on a Mission” ,“Worth” —And I literally can go on. But now that I’m actually writing, something else has surfaced to my heart.
I’ve have always been brought up in a loving home, with parents who have shown what true love is and what it means. Individuals who worked their butts off, hustled, and made sure that my childhood was something I would never forget. Parents who have been there in my dry seasons and my most adrenaline filled seasons. The moments where I would call crying telling my Mom to “tell me about myself”, and “to knock some sense into me”. Of course my Dad never falling short of a joke to get me literally ROLLING, even when I was too upset, or frustrated to laugh at anything. I knew that no matter what I went through, I could always count on them to be there for me, to not judge me, and to tell me everything was going to be okay.
I remember my mom particularly, (being the super mom she is) being present in PTA meetings, field trips, school plays, soccer games, choir, drama, science fairs, book clubs, student body meetings—HECK! She even always threw me a party(for every occasion—seriously every occasion). I honestly cannot complain about my childhood, I was never neglected, nor rejected, never never teased for failures, never put to the side, they always reminded me of how special I am, never let me forget the great talents I have, always encouraged, always loved, always forgiven, always proud PERIOD.
I remember on one occasion, I’m not clear on the details (because I was really young) but from what they told me is that my mom just had gotten contacts. Side note; my parents were parents in the 90s, which means big baggy clothes, and even bigger glasses—My mom was one of the owners of these specs. So momma got brand new contacts, I can image the excitement, no longer having to see the world through only what the glasses allowed her to see. And here I was a curious cat, who saw her put these weird things in a sealed container with “water”. So as any kid I decided to assess the situation, by emptying out the solution and lenses. I can imagine the shock on my moms face when she came into the bathroom to find the rock hard bits in the sink. When I heard the story the only question that popped in my head, about the ripped contacts was, “Did I receive the beating of my life?”. They both looked and me and instantly said the same thing, “No”. The next moments were filled with straight laughter and stories about how silly kids can be.
Umm, Get to it
I know you must be thinking “Okay Michy what the Heck does this have to do with anything?’’ Well my friends, the Bible is FULL of different things, such as similes, parallels and what I want to focus on right now is parables. Through scripture we see that mankind so little in comparison to God, so he has to kind of dumb it down so we’d understand.
Luke 15:18 “I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; [just] treat me like one of your hired men.” 20 So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’”
The story of the prodigal son has such a literal, and secular significance. Let’s think about it this way; the Father knew his son was going to use his inheritance poorly OR he gave him the benefit of the doubt, either way you don’t see the him cast his son out. You see compassion, love, and grace, toward someone who was sorry, and had no clue as to what they were doing. The story of my parents and the contacts isn’t merely as drastic But through my parents earthly love I am able to see the perfect eternal love the FATHER has for me—for us all. Regardless of the mistakes we make, time and time again he forgives us and not only that—if and when we truly come to repent from what we’ve done he gives us the BEST…
22 But the father said to his servants, ‘Quickly bring out the best robe [for the guest of honor] and put it on him; and give him a [b]ring for his hand, and sandals for his feet.”
The scripture says “‘Quickly’”—So without hesitating, and without wasting a minute more, it like I can hear his saying “My son, I have been waiting for your return”—“bring out the best robe” The best robe? That means HIS robe, so he’s basically saying go get the best—MY stuff from MY closet to put it him, so it felt as if he’d never left. The amazing thing about God is that just like in the story HE will rejoice when you decided to leave the old mentality, and behaviors. Christ gave the perfect example to us all, as to how we should act, speak, and think. Is it hard? HA—Yes. But it’s because we are human beings, made of flesh— a flesh that doesn’t want to do the good, it wants to take the easy route and be angry, lash out, and say hurtful things. But if we are able to be like Christ we would be a better version of ourselves. Christ like Influence, travels. Just like my parents when they just laughed about the contacts. At that moment in time they didn’t punish me for a wrong doing, they loved in spite of the many mistakes I’ve made. Influence like theirs would make this world a much better place, where there is no love—there is now, where there is sad and depressing— it is now full of laughter and joy. It’s the reason I want to influence others through my YouTube channel. So they can truly see that I don’t have to physically be there, but through a video, text or even a blog post— Influence Travels.
